Origin of Baby Ruth Bar
May 25th 2008 11:40
This peanutty, chocolatey, nougatey candy bar is named after the famous baseball player, Babe Ruth. Right?
WRONG!! It was named after the daughter of a President of the USA. She was born October 2, 1891, two years after her famous father's term as President ended. She died as a pre-teenager in 1904. Her name was Ruth. She had visited the candy factory at one time and had convinced the owner of the company to name a candy bar after her.
It is a popular idea that the bar was named after the Red Sox pitcher. However, a competitor to the Curtiss Candy Company, which produced Baby Ruth Bars tried to invent a candy bar and call it the "Babe Ruth Homerun Bar", tried to get it on the market, but Curtiss Candy Company forced the other company to take their Babe Ruth Homerun Bar from the market because the name was too similiar to the Curtiss Company product.
Not only did this President have a candy bar named after his daughter, he also has the same name as a large Ohio city. It was not named after him because it was named before he was President. You can find it on the southern shores of Lake Erie.
