I'm Afraid of the Dark

That is not a very masculine thing to say, right? Still, I nearly go nuts when my eyes have not yet adjusted when the lights are turned out at night. Those first few seconds seem like a long time to me.
Where I presently live, the 'brown out' times are too frequent. When it happens at night, I really want a flashlight or candle nearby. I absolutely HATE absolute darkness. How would I ever survive if I were to go blind?
That is why I want a night light in the house. They don't put out enough light to enlighten the room but just enough to enable me to go through the room without stubbing my toe on something.
There is a place on the web where you can get night lights and lots of other products for home safety. I have found night lights there, some really unusual ones. They have sport team logo lights, university logo lights and also great ideas for kids' rooms. Happy-style night lights help the children to have pleasant thoughts before going to sleep.
Besides lighting, what could I do about my hatred of darkness? Any ideas?
