... Like a Single Mom
October 22nd 2006 14:57
I’m like a single mom…
I hear that all time. “My husband works so much I might as well be a single mom. “
”He doesn’t do anything anyway, I’m like a single mom.”
No. I hate to break it to you – no matter what you aren’t like a single mom.
I hear this most often from stay at home moms. No doubt are they really busy and over worked, but they are often forgetting I do everything at home and work full time. I bear the responsibility of supporting the family, running the house and raising the children alone.
Singe moms don’t have backup nor do they have another parent to brainstorm with. Never has this more apparent to me than these last two weeks.
During a crisis there is no one to divide and conquer tasks with. My son was recently in the hospital for almost a week. Everything at the house went undone. I just recently paid all my household bills – every single one of them was late.
I’m not just the go to person here at home. I’m the only person. Every single item in this house I bought from the store (generally with the kids in tow). Every light bulb in the house I replaced. I am the only one to take out the trash. All the money coming in, I earned. Child support isn’t guaranteed. Every oil change on the car – I am in charge of. I decided which hot water heater to buy when it had to be replaced. I decided whether to get my dryer repaired or replaced.
Not only do I do everything, I decide everything. I have no one else who cares about this families well being - I mean, people care, but no one else has this family as their priority. Also I have no one to share these special moments the kids have as they mature.

moms mean when they feel like they are all alone, because I am lucky enough to have a husband that
helps me around the house.
I would feel the same way you do if my situation were the same though. I honestly don't see how single
moms can do it all like that. I don't work, except blogging, and I am getting my computer networking degree
online (full time) and have 2 young boys that can't be in school yet...and I feel overwhelmed a lot of the
time. Cudos to you and other single moms who go above and beyond for the kids!
Great blog....a definate eye opener!

I'm not a mother at all (well, except to a kitten....but I'm not sure that counts. lol), but that comment would irritate me too. I can't imagine a harder job than being a single mum.
