Song writer's problem
May 21st 2008 07:38
If you decided to write a song (or even a poem), and if the last word in your first line was "month", how would you find a rhyming word to end the next line?
I suppose you could fudge a little and use 'seventh' or eleventh, but they don't actually rhyme with 'month'. Maybe you could find a way to put in a 'ionth' word such as 'millionth'.
That word 'month' is a hard one to work with when writing rhyming text. It is not as easy as 'moon' which many songwriters use a lot. There are many words having the same end sound as 'moon', such as 'soon', 'tune', or even the old, old word 'croon'.
That is why so few songs or poems try to use the word, especially as a final sound in a line.
However, there are a number of other words which are just as elusive. In fact, there are three words for colors which have no close rhymes that would seem correct in a song.
1. One of the color words is the name of a tropical fruit.
2. One of the color words is the color often used for royalty.
3. One of the color words is a name of a metal.

I'm not sure about month, I'd have to put it in context to come up with something (and ponder it for a while).
The others may not have single words that rhyme but putting words together can rhyme.
At a push you could add words together. A word added to hinge, tinge, binge or cringe may get you a similar pronunciation to orange.
With the others, um, let's see. Now don't judge me I'm grabbing these from the top of my head
Something like....
Pain is often physical, it leaves bruises black and purple
But the pain that strikes my soul is the hurt I feel from her pull.
The moon rose high above the lake
And made it shine like silver
I’ve never felt this wide awake
That was, of course, until her.
I know, totally lame but you get my drift. I'll obviously never make a living as a poet or songwriter hehe.
